Newfoundlands are capable of pulling many times their own weight, and were used in the 19th century as draught dogs, pulling loads from the fishing boats to the markets.
As a club we seek to maintain these skills in our breed, and we have a series of carting events. These include:
Fundays - members have the opportunity to train their Newf’s in carting, in a non-competitive environment, with the help of the more experienced members.
Galas - the club attends school galas, charity fund raising and corporate events, donating money to worthy causes. For many youngsters, and adults, this is the first time they have seen a dog pulling a cart. We often have long queues of children, patiently waiting for rides. These events aim to generate interest in our breed of dog, and allow children to interact with them.
Carting Competitions - Each branch of the Newfoundland Club aim to carry out two carting events each year, consisting of two seperate sections, which handler and dog can compete in either or both sections. Manoeuverability: a set course carried out in a ring, using obstacles and gates. Freight Haul: approx 1-2 km, moving through a mixture of terrains, pulling a load and encountering obstacles and actions that can happen in a day to day environment. There are three levels, Junior, Senior and Premier. Advancement is gained by attaining a required score.
